Light Fixture Hanging Guide - Kitchen & Dining
Lighting is an essential element in any kitchen design. It can set the mood, add functionality, and showcase the overall style of the space. But with so many different types of light fixtures available, it can be challenging to determine where to hang them. In this blog post, we'll explore where to hang light fixtures such as pendants, sconces, and chandeliers in kitchens.
As with any interior design tips, these are just suggestions and common installation practices, always use your intuition and best judgement when designing your space.
Pendants
Pendant lights are a popular choice for kitchen lighting and work great for kitchen islands and over the dining room table. When hanging pendants over the kitchen island, make sure to hang them about 28-32” from the countertop and about 2.5-feet apart. When hanging pendants over a table, 72" from the floor is a good place to start.
Sconces
Sconces are the perfect task lighting for kitchens. Hang them above cabinets and shelves, or any hard to reach spot that needs some light! When considering where to hang task lighting, the rules are more variable, and should be placed where light is needed. A general rule is at or above eye level, and at least 12” above any shelving.
Chandeliers
Chandeliers are the essential statement piece in any kitchen design. They can add drama, elegance, and style to the space. When hanging a chandelier over a table, 72” and above is ideal.
Multi-port
Multi-ports are one of the most versatile and customizable options to replace your traditional chandeliers. They make a bold statement and provide the perfect ambient lighting. Just like other chandeliers, multi-ports should hang no lower than 72” when placed over the dining room table.
