Plug In Lighting FAQ

If you’re wondering what else you need to know before you start your lighting redesign with plug in hanging lights, Color Cord Company has answers to the most common questions. Check out this FAQ to learn more about hanging lights, wiring, and more.

What is a plug in hanging light?

This type of lighting can refer to any plug in ceiling light that hangs down over your space. The term includes pendant lights (drop fixtures), chandeliers, and anything else that’s suspended from the ceiling but also plugged into a wall outlet.

What is the difference between hardwired and plug in lighting?

A hardwired light fixture is one with wires that are spliced into a junction box instead of plugged into a wall outlet. A hardwired pendant light fixture is pretty permanent and requires more effort to remove without getting into the junction box and uninstalling all the wires.

With a plug in hanging light, all you have to do to move it is unplug it from the wall and collect any holders, cord stays, or swag hooks for pendant lights that were holding the plug in pendant light cord in place.

What does it mean to hang a swag lamp?

A swag light is the same thing as a regular fixture, except for the way that it’s attached to the wall or ceiling. Instead of a canopy, or similar light fitting, you’re running the lamp cord through a swag hook to hold it in place.

There are several different types of swag hooks, including pinch, round, and T-shape. These allow you to customize your lighting design, as well as reposition and secure your cord in nearly any configuration. At Color Cord Company, we offer these hooks in a variety of finish options to match your design aesthetic, including black, white, polished copper, solid raw brass, brushed nickel, and raw metal.

Can you convert any hanging light to a plug in?

Yes, you can convert almost any hardwired light fixture to a plug in, and vice versa. However, while you don’t need to be a professional to install or convert a hardwired light fixture to a plug in light, we recommend working with an electrician in your area.

If you do want to try converting a light fixture on your own, check out our conversion guide here to learn more about the tools and steps.
